SPECIAL NOTICE- 2020 Senior Expo Cancelled
Dear BASA Member and/or Ideas for Life Senior Expo Vendor,
There are two cases of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, now confirmed in Michigan and the State has declared a State of Emergency. Because of this, the BASA leadership feels we must lead by example and cancel this year’s Ideas for Life Senior Expo. The decision was a difficult one as a lot can change in ten weeks. However, it seems the best course of action right now to prevent the spread of the virus is social distancing. As caregivers and advocates for our seniors, we feel the best advice we can give them is to stay home as much as possible until public health officials advise otherwise.
The expo is our biggest fundraiser and how we fund $10,000 worth of BASA Cares awards each fall and $16,000 we give out in Senior Support annually, so cancelling was not an easy decision. We know that Coronavirus disproportionally affects our seniors, so keeping them safe and supporting them through this pandemic is essential. If you have already reserved and paid for your booth, we will be reaching out to you. We would like you to consider two options:
- Donate all or a portion of your booth fee for Senior Support
- Apply it to the 2021 Senior Expo
It will take us a few days to get this organized, so please be patient as we work through this.
We also encourage our members to research the virus and the response. We’ve included links below to the state and national site on the Coronavirus. As we learn of ways we can advocate and help our aging adults, we will pass that information on to the BASA group.

Ideas for Life Senior Expo 2020
Bay Area Senior Advocates (BASA) are proud to announce the 19th Annual “Ideas for Life” Senior Expo, scheduled on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center, in Traverse City, Michigan.
All ages are invited to attend, as the expo features many local and statewide services available to older adults, their caregivers, friends and family. By hosting such a wide variety of exhibitors, the expo serves as a convenient and engaging way for people to learn about the range of programs and services available in our region.
The theme for this year’s event is “20/20 enVision Your Future” and will feature over 100 organizations offering products and services to help seniors and their families navigate aging successfully. Attendees can expect to find wellness screenings and giveaways, as well as the information from service providers. The expo is an engaging event for everyone, as creative exhibitors share product samples, and interactive games.
Expo proceeds support the BASA Cares grant program. Each year, BASA awards ten $1,000 grants to organizations in the community that support older adults. They also allocate $15,000 to assist seniors’ unmet needs—everything from heating assistance to dental care.
Again this year, attendees can sample a variety of food offerings in a unique “Taste of Traverse” strolling luncheon at the event. Food will be served throughout the duration of the event allowing everyone to enjoy a leisurely day.
“We know that when people realize what is important to help them live their lives to the fullest, they will not only be happier, but will live longer as a result. As advocates for older adults in our community, our goal is to assist in any way we can to help families and individuals gain the information they need to prepare for the future,” says Amy Northway, Monarch Home Health Services.
